ROOTS MUSIC GATHERING
The Roots Music Gathering is the Cutting Edge's signature event. The Gathering is a convocation of scholars, musicians, promoters, media, culture bearers and music professionals who work within the area of music called roots. The Gathering promotes the premise that the communities where the roots music traditions originated are the best agents for preserving and improving the music. The conference uses a combination of panel dicussions, lecture/demonstrations, master classes, oral histories and roots performances to educate the community and the world about the value of the roots music tradition. The Gathering emphasizes educating roots musicians about professionalism, musicianship and audience development. It also gives musicians an opportunity to learn music technique in master classes.A few of the legendary musicians, composers and music professionals who have given their oral histories as part of the Gathering are: Allen Toussaint, Earl Palmer, Cosimo Matassa, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Johnny Vincent, Dale Hawkins, Henry Gray, Julius Farmer, Bob French and Harold Baptiste. If you visit New Orleans often and want to learn the history behind the amazing music that the city has to offer or if you want to begin to understand the rich cultural heritage behind the music, then the Roots Music Gathering is one conference that you should take time out of your busy schedule to attend. |
